I am SO excited to start a collection of posts called “Lets Talk! Nutrition and _______”! I have been thinking about this idea for a long time, inspired to provide reliable and accessible information on the science of nutrition to equip people to critically think through what they read and hear about food. Here and in future “Let’s Talk” posts, you can expect several truths that are often overlooked.
What better place to start than Calories! Yes, the “c” is capitalized; the full term for Calories with respect to food is kilocalories, which is just a mouthful to say!

Sugar. One word, yet it elicits a wide range of complex emotions. Joy. Celebration. Pleasure. Defeat. Guilt. Shame. Which emotions do you associate with sugar? How is it that this one word has the power to grip us?
My guess is that you are asking “why should I listen to you over the astronomical amount of nutrition information I am bombarded with daily”? Ok, maybe in fewer words, but let me answer by telling you who I am and my stance on nutrition.
· A Registered Dietitian. That means I have a University degree in Human Nutrition, completed internship, and am accountable to a professional college.
· Fascinated with nutrition because we are constantly learning, which means what we know now will continue to evolve. My mission is to provide you with the most accurate story that we know, not experiential claims or agenda-driven statements.
· Passionate about informed choice and health promotion. I believe that you need reliable information to make health choices. However, we also need to act together to create an environment that supports healthy choices and makes health accessible to all.
